Can You Use Vitamin C and Niacinamide Together?
For years, skincare advice circulated that Vitamin C and Niacinamide should never be used together — that combining them cancels out both ingredients' benefits. This myth has been largely debunked, but it's still worth understanding exactly what's true and how to layer them correctly.
Where the myth came from
Older research (using outdated, unstable formulations) suggested the two ingredients could react and form a compound that reduced their individual effectiveness. Modern, stable formulations of both ingredients — like the ones used today — don't have this problem in any meaningful way for real-world use.
Can you actually use them together? Yes.
Vitamin C and Niacinamide are commonly used together in modern routines without issue. In fact, they complement each other well: Vitamin C brightens and provides antioxidant protection, while Niacinamide supports the skin barrier and helps regulate oil — different, complementary jobs rather than competing ones.
The simplest way to layer them
- Same routine, different steps: apply Vitamin C first (as a thinner, more acidic formula), let it absorb for a few minutes, then follow with Niacinamide
- Or split by time of day: Vitamin C in the morning for antioxidant protection, Niacinamide at night for barrier support — an equally valid approach if you prefer separating them
Either method works. The old advice to use them on entirely separate days isn't necessary with today's formulations.
Is there ever a reason to separate them?
If you have very reactive or sensitive skin, some people do prefer spacing them out simply for personal comfort, not because of an ingredient conflict. This comes down to individual tolerance rather than a real chemical incompatibility.
What actually does need more careful separation
Rather than Vitamin C and Niacinamide, the pairing that genuinely benefits from more careful spacing is strong exfoliating acids (like glycolic acid) and retinol — those are the actives worth alternating across different nights, as we've covered in our routine guide.
